History

Emlen Tunnell Park is owned by Radnor Township School District (it is operated under a lease to Radnor Township) and was formerly known as Converse Field. The land that is now the park was part of Chetwynd, the John H. Converse estate. When the estate was sold, Radnor School District purchased a corner of the lot for use as playing fields, presumably for Rosemont Elementary School which was located across the railroad tracks. The park was dedicated to honor the illustrious former New York Giants defensive end that was born and raised in Garrett Hill, the neighborhood in which this namesake park is located. Tunnell graduated from Radnor High School in 1942 and, after serving in the US Coast Guard during World War II, he went on to play in the NFL until 1962. Tunnell was the first African American to coach in the NFL and be inducted in to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967. Tunnell serves as a great inspiration for Radnor youngsters and is remembered for not only being a fine athlete, but a great human being.  In 2003, the Walker Tract, a .37 acre piece of land adjacent to Emlen Tunnell at the Garrett Avenue entrance, was purchased by the Township to further develop and expand the park for parking and access.

Features & Amenities

One of the homes of the Radnor Wayne Little League, Emlen Tunnell Park is located off of Garrett Avenue and Route 30. There is ample parking off Garrett Avenue and spaces available for those with special needs. This 5 acre park features two   baseball/softball fields complete with dugouts and bleachers. A 1/4 mile walking trail surrounds the two fields making the park a great place to exercise and enjoy a ball game.  The park also features a rectangular multipurpose field and small play area. In 2005, a small playground was constructed and more parking was added to accommodate the many visitors during the busy baseball and softball seasons.
