A Message from the Office of Emergency Management

Post Date:07/13/2023 7:30 AM

Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to walking into or near flood waters. People underestimate the force and power of water. Many of the deaths occur in cars swept downstream. Many of these drownings are preventable. A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away most cars and just 2 feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season will be here before we know it (Aug - Nov) and the Radnor Township Office of Emergency Management would like to remind residents to keep safe when rising floodwaters threaten community wellbeing.

✅If flooding occurs, get to higher ground.

✅Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.

❌Never drive around road barriers blocking a flooded road.

❌It is never safe to drive or walk into flood waters.

If you encounter flooding waters and you feel you are in danger, dial 911. Radnor Township Police Department, Radnor Fire Company and EMS are trained and equipped with safety vehicles to assist you and your family to higher ground safely.

Stay safe, Radnor. Remember to turn around, don't drown!
