The Restoration & Habitat Enhancement of West Wayne Preserve has begun!

Post Date:03/21/2024 2:52 PM

The West Wayne Preserve Wooded Wetlands Restoration and Habitat Enhancement Project, part of the South Devon Area Flood Reduction Project, is at an exciting stage of construction!

This week, we began the Restoration and Habitat Enhancement of the West Wayne Preserve! Crews are in the process of planting over 110 diverse species of trees. Along with the trees, the planting of hundreds of bare root trees, shrubs, and live stakes will follow. The final step will be the upland seeding. Once the massive planting portion of the project is complete, deer fence and new signage will be installed.

Prior to the West Wayne Preserve Wooded Wetlands Restoration and Habitat Enhancement Project, the Preserve condition included lead contaminated soil, a declining overmature stand of ash and other trees, and very aggressive invasive species. There was no regeneration of native plants; the Township’s Arborist opined that left untouched, the West Wayne Preserve would become a 100% invasive dominant stand within 15-20 years.
