History

This park takes its name from the estate of Francis Fenimore, one of the largest landowners of Wayne's early days. Fenimore was the original owner of a property that totaled in excess of 100 acres, which included the area that presently makes up the park, Eastern University, and many parts of St. Davids. He called his estate Edgewood Lake, named for the pond at today's Fenimore Woods. Fenimore's land was subdivided and the stone stable at the northeast corner of the park belonged to a resulting estate that was known as Wildwoods. Valley Forge Military Academy purchased the land that is Fenimore Woods to use for their summer camp. When they built an indoor pool and no longer needed the pond for swimming, a resolution was passed by the Township in 1973 to acquire the 11.5 acre tract of land. The land was thought to be well-suited for open space due to its unique character, natural foliage, open land, pond, and stream. When purchased it featured a main house, stable, and small shed, which were parts of the original estate - the stable still remains today. A covered picnic pavilion was added to give large groups a place to gather and hold events. In 2004, a new playground was installed near the picnic pavilion making Fenimore Woods an ideal gathering spot for Township residents.
